Etang des Moulinots Information
The lake
The lake is approximately 19 acres in area, with depths ranging from 1 to 3.5 metres. As can be seen from the pictures below, all of the banks are either tree-lined or are concealed by vegetation including tall reeds. There are areas of weed in mid Summer which do not present any problem for fishing. The lake was opened at the beginning of March 2002.
There are approximately 20 swims, including 3 double swims and the number of anglers is restricted to 10 plus the on site bailiff. This allows the anglers flexibility to change swims and provide each angler with the equivalent of over 1.5 acres to fish.

The lake had previously been used for fish farming and the lake was drained at the end of October 2001 and the small carp were removed. The existing stock of larger carp were returned to the lake and supplemented by other large carp up to 55lbs.
There are no poisson chat or crayfish in the lake.
In January 2004 the lake was drained again to remove the majority of roach, perch, tench and pike and we were able to do a fair (but not totally accurate) assessment of the carp stock and sizes. Aided by the help of 3 English lads and a French team, fish were netted and the larger fish weighed. There were 65 carp between 30 and 40lbs, with a further 8 carp over 40lbs and a further 95 carp between 25 and 30lbs, over 1/2 the netted stock were in excess of 25lbs!
Based on professional advice we have not overstocked the lake or will do so in the future so that anglers can pull one carp out after another, the stocking level we have established should ensure that anglers can catch a good quantity and quality of carp each week and that there is due consideration to the welfare of the fish.
The fishery has continued to progress, with the average weight of all carp caught in 2006 at 32lbs, approximately 55% of the total carp caught were over 30lbs and there were approximately 40 fish over 40lbs landed during the year. The largest mirror caught was 56lbs and the largest common was 48lbs, in fact in 1 week there were 18 40's caught including 8 different 40lb + commons caught. We are hoping that 2007 will bring the capture of our 1st 50lb common.
We have continued to improve the vehicle accessibility to the swims and now (2007) all swims can be driven to.
